Cell Phone Advice
It's become clear to me that I finally need to get a cell phone, especially since I'm constantly changing my scheduling with my tutoring clients. Any advice on which carriers to consider? Who have you used in Pasadena, and have you been satisfied with the quality of the network, price of the service, policies of the company, etc?

All I know is that T-Mobile never worked in my dorm room but seemed to work well everywhere else. I think Lloyd is built like a fortress or something. Cingular seemed to work pretty well inside Lloyd, and I think Verizon had some trouble.
Either way that just might be the tech dorms being designed terribly for reception. My phone always worked otherwise, so maybe you shouldn't count t-mobile out.
It's sort of funny though because every time I would go back for break I would get freaked out when I got a call in my room. It was just such a rare thing to get reception indoors that I sort of jumped every time the phone rang. After I came here, though, reception has never been an issue.
I did a lot of research before I got a cell phone, and I ended up coming to the conclusion that all cell phone companies are evil.
For me, the least evil one was T-Mobile, because at least they don't have 2 year contracts. (For example, Verizon has 2 year contracts, but one year guarantees on their phones. Coincidence?) The coverage in Pasadena is good, although there are a few buildings at Tech where I don't get reception (ditto to Kangway).
My parents have a pay-as-you-go phone from T-Mobile that is working out well. I think their usage is similar to how yours may be, Mark - they use it to get in touch with folks, but don't talk for hours on end. That's a better deal if you don't want a year contract and probably won't be using lots of minutes. (It's better to pay for what you use, than to pay $30 a month and not use a lot of it).
That said, I think pay-as-you-go plans are intentionally confusing so that you give up and buy monthly plans. So you have to really take the time to understand what you're getting charged for.
